American Literature and Slavery

Slavery and the experiences of the enslaved have been explored in American literature for two centuries.

In keeping with one of the primary objectives of this site--to introduce students to a broad spectrum of the lives of the enslaved--the work of many American writers, past and present, will be offered. These works will be accompanied by lesson plans and other teaching tools.

The site will also focus on slave narratives as American literature and will compare and contrast them with the pictures of slavery presented in more formally literary works by American writers.

Lesson Plans: Combining history and American Literature to teach about slavery in America can be a powerful combination. We have several interdisciplinary units in development, as well as individual lesson plans.

Booklist: Teachers have begun submitting literature titles they use when teaching slavery. Ranging from elementary through high school levels, some of the texts suggested are offered online for free, and we've given you a direct link to those sources. Many of the offerings in the American Literature Booklist also give lesson activity suggestions. If you'd like to submit a favorite slavery related book, please Click here.
