The Underground Railroad: Three Perspectives

The following standards have been taken from the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McRel) standards.

Students will be able to:


  • Understand how the rapid expansion of slavery changed American lives and led to regional tensions.
  • Understand and be able to analyze chronological relationships and patterns.
  • Understand historical perspective.
  • Gather and use information for research purposes.
  • Use:
    • Stylistic and rhetorical aspects of writing.
    • Grammatical and mechanical conventions in written compositions.
    • Reading skills and strategies to understand and interpret a variety of literary and informational texts.
    • Listening and speaking strategies for different purposes.

Skills Attained

Students will:


  • Research, analyze, compare, and contrast understandings of slavery from different perspectives.
  • Compare and contrast the reasons different people chose to act in different ways.
  • Use electronic and print resources to discover the roles of the slave catcher, runaway slave, and Underground Railroad station conductor.
  • Investigate and evaluate how cultures change over time.
  • Creatively share information they discover through role play, diary, or song.
  • Use a U.S. map and plan route.
