The Underground Railroad: Three Perspectives
The following standards have been taken from the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McRel) standards.
Students will be able to:
- Understand how the rapid expansion of slavery changed American lives and led to regional tensions.
- Understand and be able to analyze chronological relationships and patterns.
- Understand historical perspective.
- Gather and use information for research purposes.
- Use:
- Stylistic and rhetorical aspects of writing.
- Grammatical and mechanical conventions in written compositions.
- Reading skills and strategies to understand and interpret a variety of literary and informational texts.
- Listening and speaking strategies for different purposes.
Skills Attained
Students will:
- Research, analyze, compare, and contrast understandings of slavery from different perspectives.
- Compare and contrast the reasons different people chose to act in different ways.
- Use electronic and print resources to discover the roles of the slave catcher, runaway slave, and Underground Railroad station conductor.
- Investigate and evaluate how cultures change over time.
- Creatively share information they discover through role play, diary, or song.
- Use a U.S. map and plan route.
